New & Changed

New & Changed

How Forever plays differently from Classic Era as a game: realms, Legacy, graphics, transmog, the group finder and more. For the items, quests and spells themselves, use the rest of the site.

Realms & rulesets

There's no realm list any more. You pick how you want to play, and everyone who picked the same shares one big world.

Realmless: pick a ruleset

Changed

Instead of choosing a realm, you choose a ruleset. Each ruleset is one large community for your region.

Classic Era
Pick one of many realms
Forever
Pick a ruleset: Normal, PvP or Roleplaying
  • Normal: PvP only when both players agree to it.
  • PvP: world PvP in contested zones.
  • Hardcore (one life) arrives after launch.
  • You can't move a character between rulesets; make a new one instead.

Grouping stays within your ruleset

✚ New

Groups, dungeons and raids only include players on the same ruleset.

  • Battlegrounds can mix rulesets, but Hardcore never mixes with the others.
  • Horde and Alliance still can't group together.

Language preference

✚ New

Choose your language in Options → Languages and Social, and you'll mostly meet players who chose the same.

  • It applies to your whole account and can be changed once every 24 hours.

Legacy system

A new account-wide progression that rewards doing different things (other classes, professions, PvP) rather than more power.

Legacy challenges and points

✚ New

Completing challenges earns Legacy Points, which are shared by every character on your account.

  • 65 challenges at launch, one point each: Classes 27, Tradeskills 18, PvP 12, Dungeons 3, Raids 3, Adventure 2.
  • It unlocks with your first point, usually your first character reaching level 25 (or 150 in a crafting profession, or exploring the whole map).

Legacy perk trees

✚ New

Each character spends the shared points in its own trees, up to 16 points per character at launch.

  • Professions, e.g. Bountiful Harvest: more materials from gathering.
  • Adventure, e.g. Well Rested: more rested XP.
  • Resourcefulness, e.g. Reagent Economy: class abilities stop needing vendor-bought reagents, and basic camp objects cost no materials.

Legacy rewards

✚ New

Earning points also moves you along a cosmetic reward track, with no power attached.

  • Four rewards at launch: the Spectral Bear Cub pet, Spectral Bear Tabard, Reins of the Spectral Bear mount and a Replica Ironforge Air Rifle toy.
  • More challenges, perks and a higher cap are planned with later updates.

Grouping & the world

The world still asks you to travel and talk to people. The tools to find a group are better; the shortcuts aren't there.

Looking for Group tool

Changed

Meeting stones open a new Looking for Group tool where you list your group or browse others.

  • It doesn't make groups for you or teleport anyone: there's no Dungeon Finder.
  • You still travel to the dungeon yourself.

No shared mob tagging

— Same

Only your group gets credit for a mob it tags first, as in Classic Era. Blizzard says it will “hold the line” on this.

Dungeon XP

Changed

Killing mobs in dungeons gives much less XP, and dungeon quests give much more, to make paid dungeon boosting less worthwhile.

Barbershops

✚ New

Change your hair, body type and more without making a new character.

Graphics & controls

Forever can look like the game you remember or like modern WoW. It's your choice.

Classic or Enhanced at first login

✚ New

The first time you log in, you pick a starting setup. You can change each setting afterwards.

  • Classic: SD models, no quest area markers, separate bags, transmog off.
  • Enhanced: HD models, quest markers, combined bags, transmog on.

HD or SD character models

✚ New

Choose between the original Standard-Definition (SD) character models and High-Definition (HD) ones.

  • HD models use restored Classic animations.
  • Blizzard also offers modern and Classic visual presets.

Atmosphere, lighting and weather

Changed

The timeless art style stays, with new environmental touches that make the world feel more alive.

  • Rivers that flow through Elwynn Forest, mist over the waters of Darkshore and moonlight breaking through the trees in Ashenvale.
  • Heavier weather is on the way: Blizzard has shown thick rain and fog in Elwynn Forest coming to beta zones.

Interface & addons

Many of the addons Classic players rely on are now built in, and addons can no longer make combat decisions for you.

Bigger quest log

Changed

The quest log is searchable and holds twice as many quests.

Classic Era
20 quests
Forever
40 quests
◆ In the beta

Combined bags

✚ New

Show all your bags as one, if you want to.

◆ In the beta

Modern auction house

Changed

The auction house uses the modern layout, with a search bar, categories and bulk buying of materials.

◆ In the beta

Pings

✚ New

Ping targets and places to point them out to your group.

Races, classes & combat

Combat still feels like Classic, but races, talents and stats have all been reworked.

New race: Skyborne

✚ New

The Skyborne can join either faction and start on their own island, Zephras Isle (levels 1–12).

  • Horde Skyborne can be shamans; Alliance Skyborne can be mages.
  • Both can be warriors, hunters, rogues and druids.
  • Needs a paid Skyborne pack; Forever itself comes with your subscription.

Six new race and class combinations

✚ New

Gnome Priest, Human Hunter, Dwarf Shaman, Orc Mage, Troll Warlock and Undead Paladin. More are planned.

Racials reworked

Changed

Every race now has two active and two passive racials, with about the same offensive value.

  • Stoneform now reduces physical damage instead of adding armour.
  • Will of the Forsaken still breaks Charm, Fear and Sleep, but no longer makes you immune.

Talents

Changed

The trees keep their shape and the 11/21/31-point talents, and gain a new 16-point talent.

  • Talents that granted or improved key buffs (Divine Spirit, Blessing of Kings, Improved Mark of the Wild) are now baseline for their class.

Stats

Changed

Familiar stats, with a few merged and reworked.

  • Hit and crit are one stat each for melee, ranged and spells.
  • Bonus healing also gives a third as much spell damage.
  • Items give less weapon skill; some reduce your chance to be dodged or parried.
  • Caster weapons now have spell power.

Transmog

Transmog is in, but it's optional: switch it off and everyone looks the way their gear really looks.

Optional transmog

✚ New

Change how your gear looks at a transmogrifier in some cities, or turn the whole system off.

  • With it off, you see every player in their real gear.
  • Hiding your helm or cloak still works either way.

Collecting appearances

✚ New

Appearances are collected even while transmog is off.

  • Dungeon greens and blues count for everyone in the group who could loot them.
  • Raid epics count only for the player who gets them.
  • Armour types must match, and high-level looks unlock at level 60.

Camping

Campfires become small outdoor bases where players meet up, rest and craft.

Campsites

✚ New

A Basic Campfire makes a campsite. Sit by it to rest, and nearby players can add objects to it.

  • Up to three objects, one per player, with a shared one-hour cooldown.
  • Objects add vendors, repairs, profession stations or one-hour buffs.

Camp objects from professions

✚ New

Each profession learns three camp objects, the first at skill 20.

  • Examples: Sharpening Wheel (attack power), Faction Banner (spirit), Incense Candle (intellect), Alchemy Lab, Tanning Rack.
  • Cooks can build bigger campfires that hold 5 or 10 objects.

Professions

Crafting matters at every level now, not just at 60.

Dungeons, raids & PvP

Nine new dungeons, raids for smaller groups, and a PvP rank track you climb each season.

Economy & rules

Blizzard is protecting the economy and the guild side of the game.
